Recently, a teaching team composed of English major teachers WU Yuan, LI Kexin, YANG Xiujuan, FN Yingfang, and WANG Jiankun from HEU School of Foreign Studies won the National Bronze Medal in the 2022 FLTRP Star Teacher Contest. This is the best score ever achieved in the national teaching competition after the establishment of the School of Foreign Studies, and it is also the best score ever by the science and engineering universities in our province.

FLTRP Star Teacher Contest is one of the largest foreign language teaching competitions in China, with high credibility. And the contest also stands as a new fulcrum for  the New Liberal Arts Construction and for serving national language ability construction in Heilongjiang Province. This contest features teams from nearly 800 universities across the country and over 4000 teachers, as well as more than 30 universities in Heilongjiang Province, including Harbin Institute of Technology and Heilongjiang University. In the end, 17 teaching teams entered the finals.

The final contest consists of three parts: teaching design introduction, classroom teaching presentation, and on-site Q&A. Our team has carefully prepared "A Public Speaking Course" according to the requirements of the national contest for nearly a month, delving into the textbook concept, focusing on China's green development model, measures, and achievements, and combining the theme of World Earth Day. Our team also set up student speech tasks to achieve the integration of textbooks into teaching and the unity of ideology and scientific nature . WU Yuan and LI Kexin, have designed innovative on-site teaching demonstrations to organically integrate pre-class tasks with in-class theoretical knowledge, stimulate students' learning motivation, and closely combine students' speech exercises with multi-dimensional assessments to enhance their critical thinking and cross-cultural communication abilities. Their teachings cultivate students' international perspective, patriotism, and cultural literacy; During the on-site Q&A session, their answers were accurate, fluent, complete, and focused, demonstrating the high quality of a first-class professional teacher team. The team won the highest prize in the provincial contest, as the only team in Heilongjiang Province, advanced to the national finals, and ultimately won the bronze medal in the 2022 FLTRP " Star Teacher Contest " national finals.

This is the high-level teaching competition award that the School has won since the establishment of the School of Foreign Studies. Based on the new positioning of the foreign language and literature discipline in the context of the New Liberal Arts, the School has accelerated the transformation and upgrading of party building, ideological and political education, disciplinary construction, professional construction, team building, talent cultivation, international cooperation as well as other aspects. Under the background of new engineering, students' foreign language ability and humanistic literacy have been improved in various aspects.

Firstly, with the construction of the first level discipline of foreign language and literature as the main line, the School, by cultivating six academic innovation teams, promotes the construction of innovation practice platforms and the gradual demand-oriented transformation of foreign language talents cultivation. In 2021, the School jointly established practical education bases with China Institute of Marine Technology and Economy, CSIC 714 Institute, NPIC, and others.

Secondly, the School deepens the construction of New Liberal Arts and cultivates the construction of national first-class majors and courses. The English major section was approved as a provincial-level first-class major and a national first-class major in 2021 and 2022 respectively. The College English Course was approved as a national first-class online course, and the construction of the New Liberal Arts was approved as a provincial-level project. By preparing to apply for doctoral degree authorization points and accelerating the construction of literature, linguistics, and translation disciplines, the School aims to promote the exploration of high-quality and sustainable development in multiple languages.

Thirdly, the School continuously promotes the reform of foreign language education and teaching. The School established a New Liberal Arts experimental class, and through cross-department cooperation with the "double homeroom teachers" pilot program, cultivates high-quality composite talents with "one essence, multiple abilities, and one specialty, multiple abilities" through the "3+1+1" and "3+1" models. Focusing on the unique needs of the university, with a direction of the "Ship-Sea-Core" corpus and intelligent translation, a maritime literature translation center was established in 2021. By constructing an AI intelligent translation laboratory, high-level foreign language talents with the" Shipbuilding Industry, Marine Equipment, Ocean Exploration and Nuclear Application" characteristics have been cultivated.

Finally, the School accelerates the construction of a high-level foreign language teaching team, promotes “both introduction and training” of talents, introduces high-level foreign language talents, promotes the growth of foreign language teaching talents, creates foreign language teaching masters, and enhances the core competitiveness of talents. The School has established a Teacher Teaching Development Center to enhance teachers' teaching abilities and qualities through regular teaching seminars, course design seminars, teaching skills competitions, educational technology training, and other activities. By promoting teaching through competitions, learning through competitions, and reform through competitions, the School hosted the 2021 FLTRP " Star Teacher Contest " in Heilongjiang Province, promoting the rapid growth of the teaching team and teaching experts.
