To help students systematically master quantitative research methods in applied linguistics and enhance their research design and data analysis skills, the lecture on “Quantitative Research Methods in Applied Linguistics” , hosted by the School of Foreign Studies, was successfully held on June 11, 2025, in Room 301, Building 41. The lecture was delivered by Professor Xi Hongmei from the School of Foreign Studies, focusing on fundamentals of quantitative research, research design, and practical application.

At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Xi Hongmei illustrated the differences between quantitative and qualitative research through vivid case comparisons. She emphasized that no research method was inherently superior; researchers should choose the appropriate design based on their research questions. Then, Professor Xi provided detailed explanation of quantitative research. She stressed that research questions must be of value, originality, and feasibility, foundations for conducting high-quality research. To aid students’ understanding, she used some examples of language teaching methodology to explain the methodological principles of variable design and hypothesis testing, making abstract theories concrete and tangible. In the practical section, Professor Xi focused on the reliability testing and data processing procedures of questionnaire surveys, as well as the key elements of experimental research, highlighting the importance of internal validity verification.

Finally, she offered valuable guidance on academic paper writing, recomending a series of related methodological books and quantitative data analysis tools, while patiently answering various questions posed by students. Through this lecture, students gained a more comprehensive and profound understanding of quantitative research, successfully overcoming their apprehensions, and laying a solid foundation for their future academic work.
This lecture added a brilliant chapter to the School of Foreign Studies “Academic Empowerment” series, not only broadening students’ methodological horizons but also providing practical and feasible guidance for their future academic research. Moving forward, the School of Foreign Studies will continue to host a series of academic events to help cultivate young researchers with a global vision for the new era!
