Double Boost from Research and Planning! A Fruitful “Advisory Tea Talk” for Graduate Students

On the afternoon of Nov. 22, 2025, the School of Foreign Languages successfully held a “Tutorial Ideological and Political Afternoon Tea TalkAdvisory Tea Talk” event in Room 107, Building 41. The event was hosted by Ms. Luan Lan, the graduate counselor of the school, and featured Associate Professor Dong Yan from the Department of Public Foreign Languages, Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine, as the keynote speaker. Centering on the theme of enhancing research competence and future career planning during postgraduate study, the session offered students a highly informative and inspiring academic exchange.

On the afternoon of October 22, 2025, the School of Foreign Studies successfully held the "Tutorial Ideological and Political Afternoon Tea" event in Room 107 of Building 41. The event was hosted by the graduate counselor of the School of Foreign Studies, Teacher Lan Lan, and featured Associate Professor Dong Yan from the Public Foreign Language Teaching and Research Department of Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine as the keynote speaker. Centered on enhancing research capabilities and future development planning during the graduate stage, the event provided students with a substantial and inspiring exchange and sharing session.

At the beginning of the event, Professor Dong briefly introduced her teaching and research background. Drawing on her own academic experiences, she provided practical advice on key challenges faced by graduate students, including thesis writing, managing relationships with supervisors and peers, and accumulating research experience. She emphasized the importance of developing systematic research thinking, advocating a “macro–micro–macro” approach—starting from a broad disciplinary perspective, focusing on a specific research point, and then expanding toward broader future research directions. This insightful framework offered valuable guidance for students’ academic writing and project development.

Addressing the topic of future planning, Professor Dong analyzed two main pathways—employment and doctoral studies. She encouraged students to allocate their time and energy wisely between research and practice based on their personal goals. Sharing her own experience of pursuing a doctoral degree, she elaborated on Ph.D. admission requirements at several universities (such as Guangdong University of Foreign Studies) and offered heartfelt suggestions on maintaining a positive mindset and long-term planning. She also encouraged students to actively participate in academic conferences to broaden their horizons, learn from others’ achievements, and continuously improve their own research capabilities.
