To better support the 2024 undergraduate students in preparing for the Test for English Majors Band 4 (TEM-4),, provide effective strategies and guidance, and boost their confidence for the exam, the School of Foreign Studies recently organized a pre-exam guidance and exchange session. The session invited Zheng Yixuan, Yang Yijing, Dai Jiayi, Wu Boyou, and Li Xueqing, who achieved "Excellent" scores on the TEM-4, to share their test-taking strategies. All 2024 undergraduate students attended the session.

Experience Sharing Session

As a key benchmark for assessing the comprehensive English proficiency of English majors, TEM-4 serves as a thorough evaluation of students’ first two years of foundational study. It is often regarded as the first “gateway” in their academic journey, testing integrated language skills including listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation.

Drawing on their own preparation experiences, the five students shared practical and insightful strategies. Zheng Yixuan approached her sharing from three dimensions—time planning, material selection, and mindset adjustment—and advised students to establish a scientific and reasonable preparation pace while avoiding aimless intensive practice. Yang Yijing highlighted the importance of reviewing mistakes systematically. She emphasized identifying recurring error patterns and improving weak areas through consistent reflection and consolidation. Dai Jiayi suggested that students should find their own learning rhythm, refine their strengths to the fullest, and maintain a stable mindset when facing fluctuations in mock test results. Wu Boyou broke down the exam by question types, sharing her note-taking methods and test-taking strategies. She also reminded students to make full use of fragmented time to reinforce foundational knowledge. Li Xueqing focused on the listening and reading sections, introducing effective methods such as intensive listening practice and long-sentence analysis to improve efficiency.

Experience Sharing Session Conducted by Five Students

The session was rich in practical advice. All five speakers stressed the importance of taking seriously the mock exams organized by the school, adhering to personalized study plans, and prioritizing high-yield sections strategically. For example, since writing may be more difficult to improve in a short time, students are encouraged to allocate more effort to listening and other relatively more efficient scoring components. This pre-exam guidance session is expected to help students learn from excellent study strategies, clarify their preparation challenges, and approach the upcoming exam with greater confidence. Sincere wishes for all students to achieve excellent results in TEM-4.
