Administratively, the Teaching and Research Section of the Undergraduate English Programs has nine full‑time faculty members. The Section is responsible for the teaching administration and talent cultivation of the English major and its experimental classes. In collaboration with the School’s four research centers, a total of 32 teachers participate in course instruction, curriculum development, and student development, 17 of whom hold senior professional titles. In addition, working with different sections and centers across the School, 30 instructors serve annually as undergraduate thesis supervisors, with 24 holding senior titles. In recent years, the Section has made consistent efforts in program design, talent development schemes, curriculum planning, and pedagogical reform, bringing together the School’s finest faculty resources to provide English majors with the highest quality instruction and learning experience.
The Section oversees all teaching activities for the English major. It was once awarded the title of “Excellent Teaching Team of HEU”. The English major was designated as a Key Major of Heilongjiang Province in 2011 and a First‑Class Major of Heilongjiang Province in 2021. In 2022, it was approved as a National First‑Class Major Construction Site. Faculty members have received provincial honors, including “Prominent Teachers of Heilongjiang Province” and “Advanced Individuals in Establishing Teachers’ Professional Ethics and Morality of Heilongjiang Province”. The teaching team won third place in the national finals and first prize in the national semifinals of the “Teaching Star” Competition (FLTRP), as well as the special prize, first prize, and second prize in the final of the Heilongjiang Provincial Higher Education Institutions “Teaching Star” Foreign Language Gold Course Team Competition. In 2022, the teaching team of Comprehensive English was approved as a provincial‑level “Three Enters” Demonstration Course Teaching Team.
In 2025, the course English Public Speaking was recognized as a National First‑Class Undergraduate Course, and three specialized courses were rated as Provincial First‑Class Undergraduate Courses. That same year, the English major launched an AI Pilot Class, recruiting 30 students nationwide. In 2026, a new Science and Technology Information Pilot Class is established, also enrolling 30 students from across the country.
In recent years, the Section has undertaken over 30 national and provincial level scientific research programs. More than 100 academic papers on teaching and scientific research have been published, some of which were published in international authoritative journals and the source journals of CSSCI, including Foreign Language World, Foreign Languages in China, Foreign Language Research, Comparative Literature in China, Computer-Assisted Foreign Language Education, etc., and other core journals in the field of foreign languages. More than 10 academic monographs and translation works were published. The teachers have also participated in editing and writing over 20 textbooks, three of which are National Planned Textbooks.
The English Major aims to cultivate talents with high comprehensive quality, qualified professional abilities, and a certain level of critical thinking and innovative spirit. In the future, based on the needs of building a national first-class undergraduate major, the English Major will continue to rely on HEU’s advantages of shipbuilding, ocean, and nuclear engineering disciplines, adhere to the student-centered approach, and seek the development path of “integrating mainstream, increasing characteristics, laying a solid foundation, and strengthening qualities”. The mission is to cultivate high-quality foreign language talents who can integrate the essence of Chinese and Western cultures with humanistic spirit, scientific literacy, high morality, and professional skills. The versatile talents graduated from the English Major will continuously meet the national strategic needs of building a science, technology, and maritime power, respond to the demands of economic development of Heilongjiang Province, and fit the educational positioning of HEU.
