With long-term efforts of Prof. Wang Lili and college English teaching teams from Harbin Engineering University, College English III, a compulsory course for
undergraduates, was rated as the national online-offline blended first-class course (the second batch) by the Ministry of Education in 2023.
Based on Production-Oriented Approach (POA), College English III attaches importance to learning outcomes and constructs a blended teaching mode of “in-class teaching +
online MOOC learning + platform-based (UNIPUS) learning”. Covering four major topics, namely outlook on life, business wisdom, cultural insights and global issues, this
course aims to elevate students’ proficiency in reading and writing and develop their critical thinking by integrating online resources and classroom instruction.
College English III employs an online and offline blended teaching approach. Operating under the guidance of POA, the course set a variety of learning tasks before, during
and after each class session, incrementally increasing in difficulty corresponding to the growth of students’ cognitive levels. The in-class session, which includes group discussions and oral reports, is dynamically adjusted to respond to the real-time data gathered from online learning. This approach fosters a harmonious merger between in-class and
out-of-class learning and teaching experiences. It facilitates an organic integration of improving reading skills, developing critical thinking, and fostering cultural literacy, subsequently driving the simultaneous progress of knowledge acquisition and skill development.
