The Course of First Foreign Language (English for Academic Purposes) for non-English major postgraduates has the significant mission to
enlarge their international vision, cultivating over 5000 postgraduates each academic year at Harbin Engineering University. With 15 years’ development, the course is now labeled with “scholarization” and “internationalization”, aiming to enhance students’ academic communication capabilities
and convey the voice of Chinese academia.’
I. Construction of a Curricula System Featuring Shipbuilding and Ocean Engineering
Relying on the university's distinctive advantages, a curriculum system featuring shipbuilding and ocean engineering is being developed to
enhance students' research capabilities and enrich the development of the university's core disciplines.
II. Construction of Course Content Conveying the Voice of China
The teaching content has been redesigned, deeply exploring political and ideological elements, constructing classic cases, and integrating the
teaching process.
III. Construction of Platform Highlighting a “Dual-Track Parallel”
We have completed the construction of the high-quality Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) of English for Academic Purposes, which has
been available on the platforms of XuetangX and Zhihuishu. The course has not only been selected as a model course of the Ministry of
Education’s “Tuojin Plan” , but a representative of the Ministry of Education's international platform for online teaching and learning, so as to
give a full play to the advantages of blended teaching.
IV. Construction of the Teaching Team Inheriting “Local Characteristics”
All team members, as well as the members from “Harbin Engineering University Model Branch”, have strong consciousness and capability of
curriculum-based political and ideological education. Professor Liang Hong, the team leader, has led all the teachers to conscientiously integrate
both knowledge transmission and skill development, together with value guidance in teaching, fully undertake the mission of cultivating virtue
and nurturing the mind. This comprehensively implements the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education. The team has won the first prize in the provincial inaugural postgraduate curriculum political and ideological education competition, including curriculum, cases, teaching design, and teaching competition.
